Small 1920s Apartment Renovation Looking for Creative Small-Space Thinker

Hi,

My partner and I are renovating our 64m² one-bedroom apartment in a 1920s building in North Holland, and we’re looking for a student, recent graduate or junior interior architect/designer who enjoys working on compact spaces with character.

We love the charm of the building (original doors, trim and stained glass details) and would like to restore what makes sense, while updating the apartment to feel functional, calm and cohesive. Since we’re changing almost all of our furniture, this feels like a great moment to rethink the layout, storage and overall atmosphere.

The apartment doesn’t have a lot of natural light, so light, colour and material choices are important considerations.

About the project:

• 64m² total• 1 bedroom• High ceilings• Limited storage (2 people + 1 dog)• New floor with floor heating planned• Bathroom renovation (same footprint, new tiles, shower, sink and storage)• Possibly adding a small sink in the toilet• Kitchen will be a base kitchen that we upgrade with additional cabinets and smarter storage• We are aiming for a mix of modern and vintage furniture that complements the character of the building

What we’re hoping for:

• A fresh look at the existing floor plan• 1–2 layout suggestions if improvements make sense• A clear storage strategy for the whole apartment• Ideas for built-in or space-saving solutions• Practical drawings we can use with contractors• Guidance on materials and interior direction (wall colours, trim colours, floor choice, bathroom tiles, lighting and overall styling direction)

We’ll execute most of the renovation ourselves together with contractors, so realistic and buildable ideas are important to us. As this is a self-managed renovation, we’re looking for a focused collaboration with a clearly defined scope and fee proposal.
